Earlier on March 18, the vessel, captained by Nguyen Van Cuong, from Nghe An province, sunk in the waters near Mat Island. Upon receiving the report, the Nghe An provincial Border Guard Command sent two ships to work with other forces on the search operation and broadcast distress signals to other trawlers in the vicinity, urging them to assist. Ten trawlers joined the effort.

At 9.30 a.m. on March 19, the rescue force found Tran Van Huu and brought him ashore.

Given the complicated sea condition, the Ministry of National Defense directed the coast guard and border guard forces to deploy two on-duty ships to search for the  missing fishermen. The force faced many difficulties due to strong winds and nightfall.
