The defense minister said that the Ministry of National Defense will offer adequate conditions for the families of martyrs, who sacrificed themselves while doing missions in the flood-hit areas in Thua Thien – Hue and Quang Tri provinces.

Previously, they were posthumously promoted to higher ranks by the defense ministry and bestowed with noble awards by the Party and State. The military pledged to arrange suitable jobs for the martyrs’ wives and assist their children, the General stressed.

Defense minister Ngo Xuan Lich answering reporters' questions

“The military is present in the most difficult places,” the defense minister repeated the words of Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong. Therefore, troops of Defense-Economic Unit 337 are doing their missions in Huong Hoa district, Quang Tri province, which was severely contaminated with deadly chemical toxins during the resistance war against U.S. invaders.

The defense ministry also assigned units’ leaderships to evacuate troops from dangerous areas to safer places if necessary. However, all troops must thoroughly evaluate the real situations, and be ready to sacrifice to protect people's lives and property, General Lich affirmed.

The defense ministry is willing to send helicopters and mobilize more troops and vehicles to help people in the areas affected by natural disasters.

The Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense highly appreciate the roles of the press and will create favorable conditions for reporters to document the activities of the military as it executes natural disaster prevention and control.
