Practical and meaningful activities of troops have helped enhance locals’ trust, thus strengthening defense and security to firmly protect the strategic Southwestern region. 

Timely assistance to locals 

In late June, a landslide occurred in Long Thanh hamlet, Long Giang commune, An Giang province’s Cho Moi district, causing the houses of Nguyen Van Ut Nhi’s family and other three households to collapse at night. Upon receiving the news, the Military Command of Cho Moi district immediately collaborated with the People’s Committee of Long Giang commune to help the families overcome the consequences. Twenty militiamen were sent to the scene to promptly help the families move their assets to safer places.

Earlier in mid-June, torrential rain and whirlwinds blew away the roofs of five houses and caused five boats to sink. Having been reported on the situation, the Military Command of Kien Hai district sent 20 troops and militiamen to assist locals to rescue the boats and protect locals’ property.

During severe saline intrusion and a prolonged heatwave in the Mekong Delta, the armed forces of Military Region 9 mobilized over 1,500 troops and militiamen to coordinate with other forces to transport over 12,000 cubic meters of clean water and more than 200 water containers to support the people in the provinces of Ca Mau, Soc Trang, Kien Giang, and Tien Giang.

The above-mentioned deeds have proved the timely support of Military Region 9 for the people. According to Deputy Political Commissar of Military Region 9 Major General Huynh Van Ngon, understanding the importance of the mass mobilization work, the military region’s Party Committee and Chain-of-Command have focused the leadership over the implementation of the activities in support of people in difficult localities.

Together with thoroughly grasping resolutions and directives on mass mobilization, agencies and units have fostered dissemination and education to raise troops’ awareness of the importance of the work; renewed implementation methods; worked closely with local party committees and authorities to carry out movements.

Gen. Ngon said that outstanding achievements in mass mobilization have contributed to strengthening the relationship between troops and people, raising the material and spiritual life of locals, and enhancing the people’s trust in the Party, State, and military.

Methods renewed to enhance effectiveness of mass mobilization models

In late June, Kien Giang province held a ceremony to kick-start mass mobilization program in 2025 in Phu Loi commune, Giang Thanh district. Activities within the program, which is organized from June, 2024 to January, 2025, include building houses and rural bridges, presenting gifts to policy families and poor households, providing health examination and medicines for locals, and granting scholarships to needy students with good academic results.  

Political Commissar of the Kien Giang provincial Military Command Senior Colonel Le Hoang Vu said that over the past time, activities in the program have contributed to localities’ efforts in solve many social security issues. Many welfare projects have been built in ethnic minority-inhabited  and religious areas, revolutionary base and remote areas, and localities with many difficulties. Thanks to that, the rural localities have seen many positive changes, and the people's living standards have been improved.

According to Deputy Political Chief of Military Region 9 Senior Colonel Nguyen Van Truong, the military region’s armed forces have creatively applied methods to raising the effectiveness of the work. Notably, the military-civilian Tet (New Year) model initiated by the Can Tho municipal Military Command has become tradition of the military region’s armed forces.

Over the past 18 years, the program has been organized in 293 communes, and about VND 2 trillion has been allocated to conduct activities. Over the past time, units under Military Region 9 have actively and pro-actively carried out new-style rural area building movement; built houses for policy families and needy households; conducted exchanges in border areas and on islands.

According to Maj. Gen. Huynh Van Ngon, in the coming time, the military region’s armed forces will enhance dissemination and education to raise troops’ awareness of the importance of mass mobilization work; renew implementation methods to enhance the effectiveness of the work; well coordinate with localities to conduct activities; exchange information to effectively handle circumstances to ensure political security and public order.
