Military continues to intensify anti-IUU fishing efforts
PANO - On March 25, Lieutenant General Le Quang Dao, Deputy Chief of the General Staff and Head of the Ministry of National Defense’s Steering Committee on Combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing, chaired a meeting to review the implementation of recommendations made by the inspection delegation of the European Commission (E.C.) during its March visit to Vietnam, and to agree on directions and tasks for IUU fishing prevention in the coming period.

Over the past time, military forces tasked with combating IUU fishing have taken strong and coordinated actions, promptly and effectively implementing comprehensive measures. The number of fishing vessels violating foreign waters or losing vessel monitoring system (VMS) signals has decreased significantly year-by-year. Troops assigned to anti-IUU fishing tasks have overcome difficulties and show high determination to fulfill their assigned missions.
Concluding the meeting, Gen. Dao hailed involved troops for their great efforts despite numerous challenges and prolonged task performance in offshore areas. He asked agencies and units to continue implementing anti-IUU fishing measures in accordance with their assigned functions and tasks, with a focus on strengthening inter-sectoral coordination mechanisms to ensure practical and effective outcomes.

He also directed the Vietnam Border Guard, Vietnam Coast Guard, and Vietnam People's Navy to maintain forces and vehicles, and coordinate with local authorities and relevant forces to increase inspections, review, address shortcomings, and promptly detect, prevent, and handle IUU fishing violations.
