PANO – Member of the Politburo, Vice Secretary of the Central Military Commission and Defence Minister, General Phung Quang Thanh led a high-ranking delegation, including Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Major General Phan Van Giang, leaders of General Department 2, the Operational Department, the Military Strength Department and the Internal Security Department, to visit and work with the Information Technology Department on April 11th.

After checking the working place and inquired after officers and workers of the Information and Technology Department, the Defence Minister worked with the leadership.

Chief of the Information Technology Department, Major General Ngo Van Son briefed the Defence Minister and delegates on the organization, the results of task performance in 2012 and directions for information technology in the coming years.

After listening to the report and ideas from delegates, the Defence Minister highlighted the basic requirements and directions for information and technology across the Army in the future. He especially stressed the safety and security of information in the Army and gave some major orientations for the development of the Information Technology Department in the future.

After working with the leadership of the Department, the Defence Minister had talks with officers and workers of the Department. Praising the efforts of all officers and workers of the Department, he said: “Although the Department was newly founded and still faced certain difficulties, all officers and workers of the Department were united under the leadership to overcome difficulties and closely coordinate with involved agencies and units to successfully fulfil its assigned tasks.”

While briefing the officers and workers on the country’s current political, socio-economic, defence and security situations, the Defence Minister affirmed that the country had now had better position and strength than ever before.

“Yet, the country still faces a number of challenges, so we should continue to comprehensively strengthen the Army in order to ensure national peace and stability for development and firmly protect the Fatherland’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he stressed.

The Defence Minister underlined that information technology actively contributed to national development, and Army building in particular, and therefore, that the application of information technology in military activities was necessary.

“But, we should have effective measures to guarantee the safety and security of information across the Army, while exploring the good side of information technology and applying it in the Army. To successfully deal with the issue, you, all officers and workers of the Information Technology Department, should frequently study to improve your knowledge and expertise and be active in implementing your tasks,” the Defence Minister instructed.

Alongside the efforts of officers and workers of the Department, information technology should be taught as an academic discipline in all defence and military academies, universities and schools, so that defence and military people have good knowledge of information technology and internet security, he noted.

He also emphasized international cooperation in information technology, saying that the Department should boost exchanges of experience with and learn advanced technology from other countries in order to build a strong military information technology sector, meeting the requirements of tasks.

What is more, the Defence minister asked all cadres, officers and workers of the Department to frequently improve their political stance, morals and virtues and the Department to strictly implement regulations on secret protection and internal political security, preventing enemies from establishing contacts with its personnel. 

The Defence Minister also asked the Department to actively provide effective consultancy for the Defence leadership to properly draw up short- and long- term strategies for information technology development and application in the Army in the future.
