Recently, the situation in the border area between Dien Bien Province (Vietnam) and Yunnan Province (China) has remained stable. The cooperative relationship between Vietnam and China, in general, and between Dien Bien and Yunnan provinces, in particular, has been developing and expanding in various fields.
Since August 2022, both sides have effectively disseminated information related to three legal documents regarding border management between Vietnam and China to border residents. They have collaborated in resolving incidents at the border, especially those related to border roads and markers, as well as directed affiliated units to enhance joint patrols, border control, and timely detection and prevention of violations of border management regulations.
Both sides have conducted three joint patrols between posts and checkpoints with the participation of 21 officers. They have also held two meetings at the border. The Dien Bien Provincial Border Guard Command has sent 22 letters, and the Pu'er Border Management Unit has sent 15 letters, along with 142 hotline calls, to exchange information about the border situation. The Dien Bien Provincial Border Guard Command has handed over seven individuals, while the Pu'er Border Management Unit has handed over one individual involved in illegal immigration to the other side.
During the discussion, both sides discussed and agreed on orientations for future cooperation. Accordingly, they will maintain regular bilateral discussions; continue strict implementation of the three legal documents on border management; disseminate and educate the local border residents on strict adherence to border management regulations; strengthen cooperation and timely information exchange; and effectively combat various types of crimes along the border and at the border crossings. They will enhance border patrols and control, prevent illegal immigration and other criminal activities.
Both sides will pro-actively coordinate in providing recommendations to higher authorities to reopen the A Pa Chai - Long Fu border crossing, as well as actively advise the People's Committees at all levels to conduct bilateral discussions and surveys, report the results to the governments of both countries, and propose upgrading the A Pa Chai - Long Fu border crossing to a bilateral border gate to promote economic and social development in the shared border area.
