Promoting cooperation in searching for and collecting martyrs’ remains in Cambodia
PANO - On August 17 in Ho Chi Minh City, the Government Special-Task Committees of Viet Nam and Cambodia held their 25th meeting on continuing the search, collection, and repatriation of remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and advisors fallen in Cambodia during wartime.
The Vietnamese delegation was led by Senior Lieutenant General Le Quang Minh, Vice Chairman of the General Department of Political Affairs and Standing Vice Chairman of the Vietnamese Government Special-Task Committee. The Cambodian delegation was headed by General Pol Saroeun, Senior Advisor to the King and Chairman of the Cambodian Government Special-Task Committee. Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan, Deputy Chief of the General Staff, also attended the event as part of the Vietnamese delegation.
At the meeting, both sides highly valued the results achieved under the 24th meeting’s minutes. Notably, during the 2025-2026 dry season, Vietnamese search teams recovered and repatriated 850 sets of remains of fallen soldiers. They affirmed the close coordination among the Government Special-Task Committees, military units, and local authorities of both countries in promptly addressing difficulties during the search, collection, and repatriation operations.

The Cambodian side consistently supported Vietnamese search teams and actively mobilized its people to provide information regarding burial sites of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and advisors. Moving forward, both sides agreed to further strengthen coordination and promote public awareness campaigns to improve the efficiency of these efforts.
The two sides signed the minutes of the 25th meeting and agreed on the direction for cooperation during the 2026-2027 dry season. Accordingly, they will continue coordinating the search, collection, and repatriation operations until there is no further information on burial sites. Viet Nam will maintain 11 search teams operating across Cambodian provinces and cities. Furthermore, both sides agreed to direct relevant agencies and localities to upgrade the Viet Nam - Cambodia Friendship Monuments in Cambodia, and ensure thoughtful arrangements for domestic and international delegations visiting these monuments..
