An overview of the meeting

During the meeting, both sides acknowledged that cooperation in the field of trade between Vietnam's Lai Chau province and China's Yunnan province has been actively maintained. Relevant agencies from both provinces regularly exchange information to resolve difficulties and promote the development of cross-border trade. Efforts have also been made to connect and support local businesses in trade promotion activities.

In 2024, 16 enterprises from Lai Chau, with a total of 73 products, were supported and connected to participate in a trade fair organized by Jinping County, Yunnan province (China). Additionally, two businesses were linked to participate in a thematic research and trade-investment promotion delegation in Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan. Import and export activities through the Ma Lu Thang – Kim Thuy Ha border gates have been maintained, with total trade turnover reaching USD 29.6 million as of May 22.

Delegates from both sides survey the construction site of the Kim Thuy Ha - Ma Lu Thang multifunctional bridge.

The two sides conducted an on-site survey of the bridge construction and agreed on the proposed location. They also discussed and recommended that relevant authorities in Yunnan closely coordinate with their Lai Chau counterparts to accelerate preparatory work, including bilateral agreement on the location, scale, function, and design, in order to submit for protocol signing by the two governments.

Looking ahead, both sides will enhance cooperation and consider officially upgrading the Ma Lu Thang – Kim Thuy Ha pair of border gates to international status, even before the multifunctional bridge is completed. Furthermore, they will strengthen coordination to promote and attract Yunnan enterprises to explore investment opportunities in agriculture, industry, commerce, and tourism in Lai Chau province.
