On behalf of the Engineering Company Rotation 5, Senior Colonel Nguyen Xuan Thanh, Commanding Officer of the Vietnamese peacekeeping force at the UNISFA mission and Head of the Engineering Company Rotation 5, assumed the duties handed over by Lieutenant Colonel Tran Thanh Son, Deputy Head of the Engineer Company Rotation 4.

Representatives of the two units signed a handover record, officially establishing the transfer of duties and responsibilities between the two Vietnamese engineer teams in Abyei.

An overview of the ceremony

Following the Engineering Company Rotation 5’s deployment to the area, staff from the two units promptly coordinated and closely worked together to stabilize the organization, accommodation and daily activities, while conducting inspections, inventories, cross-checks and handovers across all areas of work.

With a high sense of responsibility and a prompt and thorough approach, the handover was carried out comprehensively and in accordance with established principles and regulations. This enabled the Engineering Company Rotation 5 to quickly familiarize itself with the local situation, assigned duties, facilities, equipment and ongoing activities at the mission.

At the conference, the two units discussed matters related to force organization, command and management, specialized tasks, logistics, technical affairs, facilities and ongoing missions in the area, ensuring a smooth transition without interrupting the duties of Vietnamese engineers at the UNISFA. Lieutenant Colonel Tran Thanh Son shared practical experience gained during the unit’s mission in Abyei with the Engineering Company Rotation 5.

Upon assuming the duties, the incoming team affirmed that its officers and staff would build on and further promote the achievements and experience of the outgoing team; quickly stabilize the organization, firmly grasp the situation, pro-actively overcome difficulties, strictly maintain discipline and ensure safety in all activities.

Sr. Col. Nguyen Xuan Thanh emphasized that the officers and staff of the team clearly understood their responsibilities in undertaking an international mission. They were determined to remain united, pro-active and creative, promote their professional capabilities, fulfill all tasks assigned by the U.N. and UNISFA, and continue to uphold the image of Vietnamese blue-beret peacekeepers as responsible, professional, friendly and humanitarian soldiers.

In addition to engineering tasks assigned by the mission, the Engineering Company Rotation 5 will continue to maintain and build on effective activities undertaken by its predecessors, strengthen coordination with UNISFA agencies, partner units and local communities, and pro-actively carry out community-support activities in line with actual conditions and the unit’s capabilities.
