PANO – Deputy Defense Minister, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh received Japanese Vice-Minister of Defense for International Affairs, Mr. Ro Manabe, who is on his visit to Vietnam.

At the meeting, General Vinh congratulated Mr. Ro Manabe on his newly-appointed position as Japanese Vice-Minister of Defense for International Affairs and hoped that he would continue bolstering defense cooperation between Japan and Vietnam.

The host said that Vietnam highly appreciates the bilateral cooperation mechanisms between Japan and ASEAN and supports Japan in holding an ASEAN-Japan Defense Ministers’ Meeting and ASEAN-Japan Deputy Defense Ministers’ Meeting at the end of this year.

The two senior defense officials noted that bilateral defense cooperation between the two countries has been expanded since the two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding in October 2011. Bilateral defense cooperation has been focused on delegation exchange, personnel training, exchange of colonel-rank officers and UN peacekeeping operations.

The host suggested that the two sides consider boosting defense cooperation in experience sharing, supports of search and rescue equipment, defense industry and overcoming aftermath of war.
