The working trip is the first multilateral foreign activity of Party General Secretary and State President To Lam at the world’s largest and important forum. The visit takes place in the significant context that the two countries are celebrating the first anniversary of their comprehensive strategic partnership and preparing for the celebration of the 30th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2025.

Over the past nearly 79 years of development, the U.N. has become the world’s largest multilateral organization with the participation of almost all independent countries. Its role and activities have been expanded in all aspects, striving to implement the set principles and goals, thereby bringing about great positive impacts on international life and each nation.

In the context of the world situation continuing to develop complicatedly, the U.N. organizes the Summit of the Future, themed “Multilateral solutions for a better tomorrow,” and the high-level general debate of the 79th session of the U.N. General Assembly under the theme “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations” to unify solutions to future challenges and current urgent global issues.

The participation of Party General Secretary and State President To Lam and the high-ranking delegation of Vietnam in the U.N. Summit of the Future confirms the country's active, pro-active, and responsible engagement in the U.N. common activities. It helps affirm and promote Vietnam's position in the international arena, demonstrating the country’s viewpoint on respecting international law and the U.N. Charter. Vietnam’s contribution to the meeting and the bilateral contacts of Party General Secretary and State President To Lam during his working trip will help develop the cooperative ties between Vietnam and the U.N., international partners and friends in an intensive and effective manner.

In his pre-recorded remarks sent to the event, “Global Call for the Summit of the Future,” on September 12, leader To Lam hoped that this historic summit would bring about new thinking and new modus operandi for the world’s future and present great opportunity for the U.N. and multilateralism to reaffirm their irreplaceable values in face of today’s tremendous challenges.

In recent years, the relations between Vietnam and the U.S. have continued to develop positively. The two countries upgraded their relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development during President Joe Biden's visit to Vietnam in September 2023. During the talks, the leaders of the two countries agreed to continue to increase delegation exchanges and contacts at all channels and all levels, particularly at the high level. The two sides are also exerting efforts to implement the agreement between the two countries' senior leaders, focusing on economy, trade and investment, and considering science-technology and innovation as breakthrough areas of cooperation.

The U.S. remains Vietnam's largest export market while Vietnam has become the U.S.’s eighth largest trading partner, largest trading partner in the ASEAN, and sixth largest import market of goods. The two countries’ cooperative ties have been promoted in many areas such as defense-security, particularly in war relief; education; and response to climate change.

With the positive cooperation outcomes and potential, General Secretary and President To Lam’s working trip to the U.S. demonstrates the long-term vision of Vietnam’s senior leaders and the policy of the Party and State of Vietnam in the relationship with the U.S.

The Vietnamese people believe that Party General Secretary and State President To Lam and the Vietnamese delegation will have a successful working trip, achieving many results, thereby continuing to affirm Vietnam's foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, cooperation and development, multilateralization, diversification of foreign relations, pro-activeness and activeness in international integration; expanding international cooperation and deepening relations with the U.N., the U.S., and partners; promoting the role, position and making practical contribution to the country's future development stage.
