Da Nang honors UNESCO-recognized Bai Choi singing
PANO – The Da Nang city Department of Culture and Sports on June 15 held a ceremony to receive a certificate from UNESCO recognizing Bai Choi, a popular folk singing in Central Vietnam, as the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
This folk singing genre is popular in Central localities, including Da Nang city. Bai Choi songs are moral lessons, demonstrating patriotism, connectivity in the community and the living experience of people, performed at festivals and in daily life of local people.
Previously, the recognition was approved in the 12th session of the UNESCO Inter-Governmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Jeju, the Republic of Korea (RoK), on December 7, 2017.
Bai Choi singing has become the 10th Vietnamese heritage honored as being a representative of the cultural heritage of humanity.
Da Nang in particular has established an action plan to further preserve and develop Bai Choi singing.
Also at the ceremony, local authorities granted certificates to many organizations and individuals for their efforts to popularize Bai Choi singing in the community.
