Phu Quoc International Airport became operational in Phu Quoc district of the Mekong delta province of Kien Giang on December 2.

Built on 900ha in Duong To commune with a total investment of 16.2 trillion VND (775 million USD), Phu Quoc airport can accommodate 2.6 million passengers a year.

Replacing the local airport in Duong Dong town on Phu Quoc island, the airport, which has a 3,000m x 45m runway is capable of receiving Boeing 777s, Boeing 747-400s and similar aircraft.

Airport director Dao Viet Dung said that in addition to existing flights, the new airport would accommodate five daily flights from December 12.It will use Airbus A321s of the Hanoi – Phu Quoc route to be operated by Vietnam Airlines.

On the same day, low-cost carrier VietJet Air launched its HCM City-Phu Quoc route with one flight per day.
