PANO - A herd of about 20 wild elephants destroyed crops in Ya Lop and Ya Loi communes in Ea Sup district, the Central Highlands
province of Dak Lak from October 15 to 23. Many hamlets of these communes were seriously damaged.
According to the Ea Sup district’s Economic Department, these wild elephants destroyed 48 ha of crops including rice, corn and cashew nuts in these communes. Since mid September, these elephants have twice come into Ya Lop and Ya Loi communes and damaged a total of 118 ha of crops and a number of sentry-boxes.
The local residents used torches and loud noises, trying to drive these wild animals back to the forest. However, these measures were not very effective.
Hopefully, agencies in Ea Sup district and Dak Lak province will come up with some measures to keep the elephants away in order to protect the residents and their property.
