The leader of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said Viet Nam has become a symbol in the region in implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).
OPCW Director General Rogelio Firter made the remarks in his meeting with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem in Ha Noi on Sept. 26.
Director General R. Firter pledged further assistance to Viet Nam in training experts and help the country's relevant agencies to improve their capacity.
Deputy PM Khiem assured his guest that Viet Nam will strictly comply with the regulations of the Convention to prohibit the development, production, stockpiling and use of chemical weapons and to destroy them.
"Viet Nam totally supports the OPCW's activities to completely exclude the capacity of using chemical weapons and to make achievements in chemistry to be used for peaceful purposes only," stressed Khiem.
Earlier, Director General Rogelio Firter held working sessions with leaders of the Ministries of Defence and Industry.
Vice Minister of Industry Do Huu Dao, who is also Director of Viet Nam's National Agency on the implementation of the CWC, told the press on Sept. 26 that Viet Nam is among 34 percent of the CWC's 179 members that have taken measures to carry out the convention.
The OPCW leader will conclude his three-day visit to Viet Nam on Sept. 27.
