Vietnam attaches a lot of importance to its relations with Latin American countries, including Uruguay, stated Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem while receiving the Uruguayan Foreign Minister Luis Almagro in Hanoi on June 15.

The Vietnamese Deputy PM and FM praised the developments of bilateral ties between the two countries in recent years, after mutual high-ranking visits, and Uruguay opening an Honourary Consul Office in Hanoi.

He said that both countries could do business together in many fields, especially husbandry, agro-forestry, bio-technology, culture and sports.

FM Luis Almagro said that Uruguay respects Vietnam’s high standing in the regional and international arena, agreeing that both should work together in economics and trade and create a legal foundation for a long-lasting and stable relationship between them.

Both parties talked of measures to increase cooperation and mutual support at international organisations and multilateral forums, including the United Nations, the World Trade Organisation, and boost cooperation between ASEAN and the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR).

Later the same day, FM Luis Almagro and the Minister of Science and Technology Hoang Van Phong signed a science and technology cooperation agreement.

Under the document, Vietnam and Uruguay will increase science-technology cooperation by accelerating joint projects and programmes in agro-forestry, bio-technology and aquaculture.

The Uruguayan FM also met with the Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Le Danh Vinh and the Vice President of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry Doan Duy Khuong to discuss measures to strengthen trade and scientific-technology cooperation between the two countries.
