Nobel Laureate Dr. Jerome Isaac Friedman had a talk on quarks to students and science lovers in Quy Nhon city in central Binh Dinh province on July 28.

The talk gave insight into the structure of quarks, an elementary particle and a fundamental constituent of matter. Most of the matter we see around us is made from protons and neutrons, which are composed of quarks.

Dr. Jerome Isaac Friedman (L) addressing the event.

Dr. Friedman is an American physicist, Institute Professor and Professor of Physics, Emeritus, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a 1990 Physics Nobel Laureate along with Dr. Henry Kendall and Dr. Richard Taylor, for work showing an internal structure for protons later known as quarks.

The event is part of an international conference gathering nearly 80 domestic and foreign physicists to share the latest achievements and enhance cooperation in the field.

The three-day event focuses on flavour physics - a new area for scientists to study the nature of quarks.

Binh Dinh is expected to become a venue for Vietnamese and international scientists as it is home to the International Centre of Interdisciplinary Science Education (ICISE) and a space science complex, the first of its kind in Vietnam which is under construction.
