Viet Nam and Micronesia should strengthen cooperation in areas that the two countries are strong in such as agriculture and fishery in order to meet the aspiration and benefits of the two peoples.

State President Nguyen Minh Triet made the suggestion at a reception for visiting Speaker of the Micronesian Congress Isaac V. Figir in Ha Noi on January 10.

The State leader expressed his thanks for Micronesia ’s support for Viet Nam’s bid to become a UN Security Council non-permanent member and said he wished the two countries would continue to coordinate closely in the framework of the United Nations as well as other international and multilateral forums.

Speaker Figir affirmed that Micronesia will continue its support for Viet Nam in the UN, adding that the country is determined to further ties with Viet Nam in areas of common interest.

He said he hoped this visit will open new opportunities for the two countries’ future cooperation.

President Triet and the Micronesian Congress leader shared their concerns about climate change, which is threatening the people’s life.

President Triet said the concern prompted Viet Nam to sign the Kyoto Protocol and attend the 15th APEC Forum on Climate Change held in Sydney, Australia, last September.
