More than 200 people took part in an exercise to deal with oil spill and fires on Dong Nai River, the southern province of Dong Nai, on December 31.

The drill was jointly organised by the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment and Hai Van Transport Service Company.

The scenario involved a collision between a 5,000-tonne cargo ship carrying dust coal and a wharf. The clash made five tonnes of oil spill into the river while setting fire on the deck. The 29-strong crew on board conducted on-site fire-fighting and called relevant authorities for help.

Tens of canoes and ships and rescue forces were mobilised to control the oil spill and fire. The incidents were managed after 50 minutes.

According to Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, the drill is a good chance for rescue forces to practice their skills and ensure the coordination mechanism among relevant forces operate smoothly in cases of emergency.
