Ursus thibetanus

A species of bear, scientifically named as “Ursus thibetanus” or “Ursus tibetanus”, has been found in Quang Ngai Province.

The female bear, weighing 65 kg, has been raised by Nguyen Van Thanh, a villager in Quang Ngai Province.

Mr. Thanh said that he bought the bear two years ago from a hunter from an ethnic group in Quang Nam Province.

“I did not know she is an endangered species. I bought her because she has a beautiful hair colour”, added Thanh.

Ursus thibetanus, also called the Asian Black Bear, is a medium–sized species of bear and classified by the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as an endangered species.

This species of bear is around 1.3-1.9 m high. A male weighs between 110 and 150 kg while a female weighs between 65 to 90 kg. Its life expectancy is around 25 years.

At present, the Provincial Forest Protection Department will work with wildlife rescue centres to protect the endangered species of wild animal.
