Positive outcomes in the fight against IUU fishing
PANO - In order to remove the European Commission’s “yellow card” for Vietnamese seafood products, the Song Doc Border Post under the Ca Mau provincial Border Guard Command has implemented many measures, focusing on dissemination work to effectively prevent and combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Living and doing business in the area with a high number of trawlers, Nguyen Van Linh, who is from Song Doc township, Tran Van Thoi district, Ca Mau province, and also the owner of trawler CM 92347 TS, knew quite well that the IUU fishing still occurred in the area. However, thanks to dissemination work implemented by local authorities, especially officers and soldiers from Song Doc Border Post, the locals’ awareness has been promoted.

Song Doc Border Post manages 32.7km of coastline in Tran Van Thoi district, including nine river mouths flowing into the sea. There are many trawlers inside and outside the province operating here. To combat illegal fishing, the border post has coordinated with local authorities and functional agencies to promote the 2017 Fisheries Law and Directive 17-CT/TU, issued on February 26, 2024 on preventing destructive fishing.
Over 500 posters and 800 leaflets have been distributed to more than 500 trawlers at checkpoints to raise awareness and implement measures addressing the European Commission’s “yellow card” warning.
In addition, Song Doc Border Post has deployed forces and vehicles to conduct sea patrols to promptly detect and strictly handle any cases of violation. Through patrols, the unit has identified five cases involving 11 individuals using electric shock devices for illegal fishing and fined them VND 75 million.
Through drastic measures and effective dissemination, there have been no violations of IUU fishing in the area managed by Song Doc Border Post. In the time ahead, the unit will continue working with local authorities to boost dissemination work, encourage fishermen to strictly follow regulations against illegal fishing, among others.
