The unit has also promoted their role in helping the locals respond to natural disasters and implementing search and rescue missions.

Stationed in Co To townlet, Co To island district, Quang Ninh province, the troops here always follow the motto “the post is home; the border area is Fatherland; and ethnic minorities are family members.” Therefore, they have actively grasped situations and mobilized the local people to strictly observe all regulations while operating at sea.

Border troops call on fishermen to seek safe shelters

Knowing that illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing prevention work is a key mission, Co To Border Post has disseminated information to fishermen and local people, presented national flags and life jackets to them. According to Do Huu Toan, a fisherman in Dong Tien commune, thanks to the dissemination work, the fishermen were well aware of information related to IUU fishing prevention, thereby following all regulations to protect the aquatic resources.

In the first half of the year, the Co To Border Post sent 50 troops to grasp the situations in the area and 60 others to disseminate information to the locals. The fishermen have strictly adhered to State’s laws on fishing, fighting crime, and ensuring political security, social order, and safety in the area.

Since the beginning of this year, the unit has also mobilized nearly 100 troops to conduct patrols at seaports and at sea, strictly managed nearly 2,000 tourist ships visiting Co To and Van Don islands.

The unit has also pioneered in boosting coordination with relevant forces to prevent and control natural disasters and conduct search and rescue work. Recently, as Storm No.1 (Talim) came, the unit notified all trawlers and vessels operating at sea to move to safe places; helped fishermen shelter from the storm; and joined hands to bring more than 10,000 visitors ashore.

According to Colonel Vu Quoc Huy, Political Commissar of the border post, amid complicated developments of the weather and natural disasters on the island, the unit has closely worked with local authorities and relevant units to promote dissemination work, grasp the situation at sea, and support fishermen operating at sea to stay safe.

Tran Quang Phe, a fisherman at sea, held that fishermen here always receive support from the border troops. Especially, on rainy and stormy days, officers and soldiers of Co To Border Post always notify and call on fishermen to seek shelters. Besides, they are also present when needed to give the locals timely assistance. “With the wholehearted support from border guards, we all feel safe when operating at sea,” he underscored.
