The timely reinforcement of troops to Phu Quy Island amid the high possible spread of COVID-19 in the locality is necessary to assist the local authorities and on-the-spot forces in controlling the pandemic, ensuring local order and security, and boosting patrols and monitoring the entry and exit of local fishermen and other people.

Phu Quy Island is nearly 56 nautical miles from Phan Thiet city, Binh Thuan province. It is home to more than 30,000 people of three communes.

As of 00:00, November 12, Phu Quy island district started implementing social distancing to curb the disease after it recorded first COVID-19 community-transmission cases after more than two years with no infection.

Since 00:00, November 13, the operation of passenger ships on the Phan Thiet - Phu Quy route and vice versa has been temporarily suspended until further notice. Transportation of goods on the route and other activities in special and urgent cases will follow the instructions issued by the Department of Transportation of Binh Thuan province.

Apart from the aforementioned reinforcement force, since early November, the Border Guard Command of Binh Thuan province has sent 30 troops to Phan Thiet city and 41 others to the Vietnam - Cambodia borderline to fight COVID-19.
