In 2020, Vietnam will take over the ASEAN Chair, start its term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2020-2021period, and boost its cooperation with the European Union.
The meeting was co-chaired by Deputy Defense Minister Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh and Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Quoc Dung.
At the meeting, Lieutenant General Vu Chien Thang, Director of the MND’s Department of Foreign Relations, delivered a report on the MND’s priorities, agenda, and proposals for activities in 2020.
Accordingly, in 2020, the MND will host an array of important events, including the tenth anniversary of the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM+), the 65th founding anniversary of the Vietnam People’s Navy, along with other important military-defense conferences.
These military-defense meetings will aim at promoting dialogues, military-defense cooperation within ASEAN and between ASEAN and other partner countries, enhancing practical coordination in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and raising Vietnam’s competence through co-chairing the ADMM+ Experts’ Working Group on Peacekeeping Operations.
Addressing the meeting, General Vinh asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to contribute opinions to the report, and to closely team up with and support the MND in the preparation for the military-defense events in the time to come.
Agreeing to the report, Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Quoc Dung highly appreciated the MND’s thorough preparations and confirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will closely cooperate with the MND to successfully organize external defense events in the coming time.
The Deputy Foreign Minister also asked the MND to work closely with his ministry to prepare defense-security contents for external affairs events during Vietnam’s ASEAN Chair Year 2020.
