Chief of the General Staff and Deputy Defense Minister Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Tan Cuong chaired the event.
Addressing the event, General Cuong expressed his deep gratitude to fallen soldiers, policy households and former leaders for their sacrifice and dedication, contributing to upholding the tradition of the GS, as well as the cause of national liberation, unification, construction and defense.

After briefing delegates on the situations in the world, region and country, General Cuong underscored that over the past time, the GS has always studied strategies, properly assessed the situation, and made recommendations to the Party, State, Central Military Commission (CMC) and Ministry of National Defense (MND) to well handle military and defense situations, be ready in any circumstances, and firmly protect the Fatherland.
Meanwhile, the GS has also assisted the Party, State, CMC, and MND to consolidate personnel organization; promote external defense relations; develop defense industry; closely work with local authorities to build defensive areas and enhance defense power; while coordinating with the Public Security Ministry to ensure political security and social order.

In the context of current situation, the GS has promoted practical inspections, while proposing and implementing many policies and solutions to improve training quality, in line with the application of science and technology, thereby improving the combined strength and combat readiness capacity, and obtaining remarkable achievements in international sports festivals.
The deputy defense minister also hoped that the former leaders would make further contribution to help the GS fulfill all assigned missions by the Party, State and people.
