GS Chief directs defensive operation exercise in MR4
PANO – On October 26, the Exercise Steering Committee of the Ministry of National Defense (MND) directed Military Region 4 (MR4) to conduct a field-training exercise on river-crossing operations as part of its 2026 defensive operations exercise.
Chief of the General Staff and Deputy Defense Minister General Nguyen Tan Cuong attended and directed the exercise.
The field-training exercise focused on river-crossing operations in combat, involving engineering, artillery, tank and armored vehicle, and infantry forces. Engineering troops provided crossing support for personnel, vehicles and technical equipment using 60-ton PMP pontoon bridges and GSP ferries. Tank, armored vehicle and infantry units conducted preparations and practiced swimming across the river.

All forces complete the river-crossing operations with absolute safety for personnel and vehicles. |
These operations are complex and require scientific command and control, flexible responses to evolving situations, and close coordination among participating forces. The exercise also placed high demands on troops’ proficiency in operating specialized vehicles and technical equipment to ensure forces could cross the river and maneuver as required in combat.

The exercise contributed to evaluating the leadership, command and control capabilities of officers at all levels, as well as units’ ability to organize and deploy forces and provide technical support. Its results will be seen as a basis for MR4 to draw lessons on command and control, coordination and river-crossing support, refine operational plans, improve training quality, and enhance its ability to fulfill assigned missions.
