Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Defense Minister, chaired the event.

Accordingly, Major Bui Van Nhung from the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations (VNDPKO) was tasked to replace Colonel Nguyen Thi Oanh, as a military observer in the UNMISS.

Speaking at the ceremony, Director of the VNDPKO Major General Hoang Kim Phung said since the country’s participation in the U.N. peacekeeping operations for nearly nine years, Vietnam has sent 512 servicemen to U.N. missions and headquarters. All Vietnamese peacekeepers have been conducting their assigned tasks effectively.

General Phung also noted that under the leadership and direction by the Central Military Commission (CMC), MND, and other functional organs, the department has been active in preparing to dispatch its staff to U.N. peacekeeping missions so far.

On behalf of the CMC and MND, General Chien congratulated Major Bui Van Nhung on being selected to perform the new duties in the UNMISS. The deputy defense minister requested the newly-tasked officer to continuously grasp and implement the Party, State and military's viewpoints and guidelines on external affairs; uphold traditions of the Vietnamese peacekeeping force and images of Uncle Ho’s soldiers in task performance; and pay due attention to strengthening internal solidarity and promoting relationship with foreign colleagues and local residents, contributing to raising the country’s capacity and efficiency in joining U.N. peacekeeping operations.

In turn, Major Bui Van Nhung expressed his honor to be directly involved in U.N. peacekeeping activities and pledged to do well in his upcoming duty.
