The event was attended by Brigadier General Ameer Muhammad Umrani, Acting Head of Mission and Force Commander of UNISFA; Commanding Officer of the Vietnamese force participating in U.N. peacekeeping operations in Abyei and Head of the Vietnamese Engineering Company Rotation 2 Senior Colonel Nguyen Viet Hung; the Minister of Health, the Minister of Education, the Mayor of the Abyei region, and representatives from UNISFA's agencies.

The event’s theme, "Joining Hands for a Greener, Cleaner, and More Sustainable Abyei," was proposed by the Vietnamese Engineering Company with the aim to encourage those who are working and living in Abyei to together protect the environment through such practical actions as planting trees or disposing of waste properly.

The event attracts the active participation of local leaders and representatives of the mission’s agencies and foreign units.

During the event, experts from UNISFA's agencies mentioned issues that have been threatening the living environment of the people of Abyei. They said that the region is facing numerous environmental problems, including air and water pollution, solid waste, and serious soil pollution.

Also at the event, the Vietnamese Engineering Company Rotation 2 organized a fashion show featuring recycled products. On behalf of UNISFA, Brigadier General Ameer Muhammad Umrani awarded insignia to the units stationed in the Abyei in acknowledgement of their contribution to the local community. On this occasion, delegates planted trees at Highway Base.

A fashion performance at the event

Through activities, the organizing panel wished to enhance people’s awareness of the impact of desertification, thus coming up with new and creative methods to protect the environment in the region.

Since their deployment to Abyei, together with performing regular duties, the Vietnamese engineers have actively worked with UNISFA's functional agencies, local authorities, and community to seek measures to improve the living environment in the region. In particular, the unit has organized three-party meetings among the mission, local authorities, and residents to better understand the environmental issues confronting them; collected and treated solid waste and dredged drainage systems in densely populated areas; provided water for locals in Bachol Muala village on a weekly basis.

During their deployment in Abyei, the Vietnamese Engineering Company has paid attention to environmental protection. According to Second-in-command Officer of the company Major Vu Tri Xuyen, while performing task, the Vietnamese engineers have strictly adhered to the regulations and guidelines of UNISFA's environmental agencies; been well aware of their role and responsibility in protecting the environment; actively planted trees. These practical activities aim to achieve the target of building a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable Abyei.
