Vietnamese, Cambodian units partner to gather remains of fallen troops
PANO - Vietnamese Military Region 9 signed a cooperation agreement with Cambodian units on searching and repatriating remains of fallen Vietnamese troops and advisors in the war in Cambodia in the dry season of 2021-2022 on November 26 at border marker No.275 at Tinh Bien International Border Gate in An Giang province.
The Vietnamese delegation at the signing ceremony was led by Major General Doan Thanh Xuan, Deputy Political Commissar of Military Region 9, while the Cambodian delegation included representatives of the Special Military Region, Military Region 3, and Kal dal and Kampong Chhnang provincial Special Committees.
According to a report delivered at the event, realizing an agreement reached by the two governments in August 28, 2000, Search and Collection Team K90 under the Department of Political Affairs of Military Region 9 have gathered and repatriated 1,844 sets of remains of fallen troops. In the dry season of 2020-2021, eight sets of remains of fallen troops were gathered by Military Region 9.
As planned Team K90 will start collecting information and conduct study in Cambodia this December before sending personnel to the country to search and gather remains of fallen troops from February to May 2022.
Addressing the signing ceremony, Major General Doan Thanh Xuan thanked Cambodian military regions and provincial special committees for creating favorable conditions and actively supporting Search Team K90 to complete their duties. He expressed his hope that more sets of remains of fallen troops will be repatriated from Cambodia in the time ahead thanks to the Cambodian units’ assistance despite complicated developments of COVID-19 and bad weather conditions.
