Gen. Thang expressed appreciation for the Japanese diplomat’s continued attention to promoting cooperation between the two countries, the two defense ministries, and between the Vietnam People’s Army and the Japan Self-Defense Forces. He affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to the comprehensive strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia and the world with Japan.
The host spoke highly of the bilateral defense cooperation, saying that it has constantly developed in an extensive, intensive, increasingly effective and practical manner. He laid stress on the effective cooperation mechanisms such as the Deputy Minister-level Defense Policy Dialogue and Staff Officer Consultations among the naval, ground and air forces. In addition, cooperation in training, defense industry, technology transfer and war consequence remediation has also achieved positive results.
The Vietnamese defense leader asked the Japanese ambassador to continue to pay attention to and direct the implementation of Vietnam - Japan defense cooperation contents to achieve substantive outcomes, focusing on exchanges of delegations at all levels, especially high-level ones; maintaining the effectiveness of cooperation mechanisms, particularly the Deputy Minister-level Defense Policy Dialogue and the Deputy Minister-level Dialogue between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense; service-to-service cooperation; effective implementation of the Letter of Intent on training cooperation signed in December 2025; and cooperation in military medicine, cybersecurity, United Nations peacekeeping operations, war legacy relief, and mutual support at multilateral mechanisms and forums, especially within the ADMM+ framework.

On this occasion, Gen. Thang invited leaders of the Japanese Ministry of Defense, the Japan Self-Defense Forces and Japanese defense enterprises to attend the 3rd Vietnam Defense Expo, slated for December 2026 in Hanoi.
For his part, Ambassador Ito Naoki highly appreciated the cooperative ties between Japan and Vietnam, in which defense cooperation is one of the important pillars.

The diplomat expressed his hope that in the coming time, the two sides would continue coordinating to implement agreed cooperation contents, especially in defense, and build on the positive outcomes of the recent official visit to Vietnam by Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae. Key areas of focus include United Nations peacekeeping operations, high-level delegation exchanges and contacts, and cooperation in training and education, thereby further promoting the two countries’ partnership.
