Vietnam, Canada conduct bilateral defense consultation in 2023
PANO - The Vietnam - Canada Defense Consultation 2023 was held in an online form on July 27 under the co-chair of Major General Vu Thanh Van, Director of the Department of Foreign Relations of the Ministry of National Defense, and Assistant Deputy Minister of Canada's Department of National Defense Peter Hammerschmidt.
The consultation took place in the context that the two countries are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations (1973 - 2023). This was an opportunity for the two sides to evaluate the outcomes of defense cooperation over the past time, suggest new cooperation fields in the coming time, and prepare for the second deputy-ministerial Vietnam - Canada Defense Policy Dialogue, which is scheduled to be held in Canada in September.

At the event, the two sides agreed that defense cooperation plays an increasingly important role in the Vietnam - Canada Comprehensive Partnership and is paid attention to by the leaders of the two defense ministries. Over the past time, defense ties have been actively implemented by the two sides, in line with the Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral defense cooperation signed in 2019 and the three-year bilateral defense cooperation plan for the 2021 - 2023 period. They have obtained substantial and outstanding achievements in such fields as delegation exchange, consultation – dialogue mechanisms, training, U.N. peacekeeping operations, and defense industry, among others.
The two sides agreed that in the coming time, they will continue to effectively implement defense cooperation following the signed documents and agreements, focusing on delegation exchange, dialogue, consultation, training, U.N. peacekeeping operations, defense industry, and settlement of war legacy.

They promised to continue to consult and support each other at regional and international security forums, such as the ASEAN Regional Forum and the Shangri-La Dialogue, contributing to peace, stability, and development in the region and the world.
At the consultation, the two sides agreed to continue their cooperation to make thorough preparation for the second Vietnam - Canada Defense Policy Dialogue at the deputy ministerial level in September.
