At the talks

Defense Minister Senior Lieutenant General Phan Van Giang made this statement during a meeting with Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense General Chansamone Chanyalath on June 28 in Hanoi.

On this occasion, General Giang expressed his delight to meet General Chansamone Chanyalath, an intimate friend and comrade of the Vietnam People’s Army, and thanked the Lao Defense Minister in particular and the Ministry of National Defense in general for their assistance to Vietnam in COVID-19 prevention and control over the past time. He affirmed that the mutual support during this hard time has demonstrated the long-standing relationship between the two militaries and peoples.

Giang said that as COVID-19 is developing complicatedly, the two sides should enhance mutual support to soon control the pandemic and bring life back to normal.

For his part, General Chansamone Chanyalath emphasized that in any circumstances, the Vietnamese and Lao Parties, States, militaries and people always give sincere sentiments and wholehearted support to each other. He thanked the Vietnamese Defense Ministry for its timely assistance to Laos in the pandemic fight.

At the meeting, the two sides agreed that despite the various impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the two ministries have implemented their cooperation plan in 2021 in an active and effective manner. Meanwhile, relevant agencies of the two defense ministries effectively carried out the contents reached at the online talks between Vietnamese and Lao defense ministers in May this year.

They agreed to make preparations for further cooperation when the pandemic is under control, including delegation exchanges at all levels, joint activities between the two militaries, and training. The two ministries will instruct their competent forces in border areas to work together to prevent the spread of the pandemic and illegal border crossings.

* On the same day, General Chansamone Chanyalath met with former Vietnamese Minister of National Defense General Ngo Xuan Lich, during which he briefed General Lich on the outcomes of the bilateral defense cooperation over the past time. The Lao defense minister said that the two militaries have agreed to maintain their close cooperation.

For his part, General Lich thanked General Chansamone Chanyalath for his thoughtful words and congratulated him on being promoted to Lao Deputy Prime Minister. He expressed his strong belief that the Lao defense minister and the Lao Ministry of National Defense will fulfill all missions assigned by the Party and people.
