The operation of the Dung Quat Oil Refinery has helped transform Quang Ngai province from a poor locality into a key economic hub in the central region, Nguyen Van Chat, Deputy General Director of the Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Co. Ltd, has declared.

A workshop was held on February 24 in the province mark the Dung Quat refinery’s fifth year.

Operating commercially since 2010, the refinery has turned out nearly 26 million tonnes of oil, petrol and gas so far and satisfied 30 percent of demand for petrol nationwide, said Chat, whose company runs the plant.

In 2013, it produced 6.6 million tonnes, 17 percent higher than its set target, and gained over 154 trillion VND (7.3 billion USD) in revenue and 2.9 trillion VND (138 million USD) in profit. It also contributed 28.4 trillion VND (1.3 billion USD) to the State budget.

The plant’s operation has fuelled the development of the petrochemical, support and services industries, helping ensure energy security, reduce the dependence on imported products and spur the national economic growth, he added.

Vice Chairman of the Quang Ngai People’s Committee Pham Nhu So said the Government has decided to enlarge the Dung Quat Economic Zone to 45,300 hectares to build it into a national petrochemical centre.
