The Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM) has reported the results of a study abouttherelationship between multi-national companies and the socio-economic development of Vietnam.

The Unilever Vietnam Company (UVN) was chosen as an object of the study in recognition of the company’s contribution to job creation through both direct and indirect channels.

UVN has to date invested US$ 130 million in Vietnam. In 2008, its turnover accounted for 1% of Vietnam’s GDP.

Dr. Pham Lan Huong, head of the study group, said that 1,200 people are working full time while more than 8,000 labourers are working part time for UVN. At present, UVN has 76 material suppliers, 54 packing companies and manufacturers as business partners, and 283 distributors with more than 150,000 outlets nationwide.

The study, designed by CIEM, is aimed at helping the Vietnamese government consider policies to create a more favourable business environment for multi-national companies.
