My Nhan Ke (The Lady Assassin), a 3D Vietnamese martial arts film featuring local models, pocketed VND 35 billion (US$ 1.7 mil) in revenue by Feb 13, according to its distributor.
Out of the ten movies which hit local screens this Tet, only four are Vietnamese flicks.
However, they have been big hits with local audiences.
According to My Nhan Ke’s distributor, the flick has been able to earn so much because it was released in both 2D and 3D, with tickets for 3D usually costing twice as much.
It is estimated that roughly 400,000 people have seen this high-profile film.
According to Mariam, the director of Megastar cinemas, the company’s Tet revenue has risen by 28% compared to the same period last year, mostly thanks to the resounding success of Vietnamese films.
The comedy Nha Co Nam Nang Tien (The House With Five Fairies), which features famed comedian Hoai Linh, is currently topping the popularity list at most cinemas.
It also tops Megastar’s current billboard for the nine films it is distributing and showing.
Following the comedy are Die Hard 5, My Nhan Ke, Warm Bodies, Yeu anh, em dam khong? (Do you dare love me?), Monsters, Inc. 3D, Bay vao coi mong (Soar into the dreams), Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, and Movie 43.
The huge ticket sales has also been attributed to the considerable number of couples going to the cinema to celebrate their love on Valentine’s Day, which fell on the 5th day of Tet.
With three more days to go in the Tet holiday, this season’s proceeds from Vietnamese films are expected to see a further surge compared to last year.
