Around 600 marksmen from 10 ASEAN countries will participate in the 16th ASEAN Armies Rifle Meet (AARM) to be held in northern Ha Tay province from December 1-7.

The ASEAN marksmen will compete in five shooting events using rifle, machine-gun, carbine, men's and women's pistol. They will also take part in shooting exercises in real terrains.

The AARM will offer an opportunity for the regional countries' armies to strengthen exchanges and solidarity, said Lieutenant General Pham Hong Thanh, Deputy Director of the Politics General Department.

To prepare for the competition, the Ministry of Defense upgraded the Mieu Mon Shooting-Range into an army training centre with modern facilities, Thanh said.

Since the Vietnamese People's Army joined the 16-year-old ASEAN Armies Rifle Meeting in 2002, Vietnamese marksmen have participated in the AARM for five times and ranked fifth among the regional contestants.
