Vibrant festival of Lo Lo people in Vietnam’s Northernmost land
PANO - During festival days in Lo Lo Chai hamlet, Lung Cu commune, Tuyen Quang province, the Lo Lo Hoa and Lo Lo Den people gather from near and far, creating a dazzling space full of colors and rich traditions.
Against the background of ancient gray stone, the brilliant red, yellow, blue, and purple colors of their costumes shine like a rainbow stretching across the mountains, drawing visitors into a vivid picture where nature and culture harmonize.
For generations, Lo Lo Chai has been likened to a “fairy-tale village” of Vietnam’s northernmost frontier. On every festive occasion, the entire hamlet comes alive in traditional attire, highlighting its unique charm amid the majestic limestone peaks. On indigo fabric, tiny motifs are pieced and embroidered with meticulous care, the result of Lo Lo women’s dexterity and creative spirit. More than simple clothing, each outfit is a distinctive work of art, expressing refined beauty while preserving the community’s cultural roots.
Beyond the dazzling costumes, the festival at Lo Lo Chai overflows with unique rituals and traditional folk games. The resonant sound of bronze drums blends with graceful dances, as though awakening the northern mountains and forests. The solemn ancestral worship ceremony, passed down through many generations, reflects the people’s gratitude to their forebears and their aspirations for prosperity.
Interwoven with the sacred atmosphere is the liveliness of folk games such as stick pushing, tug-of-war, and bamboo pole dancing, which draw enthusiastic participation from both locals and visitors. Every smile and every round of applause not only brighten the festival space but also help preserve and spread the unique cultural identity of the Lo Lo at the country’s northernmost point.
