According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake had a focal depth of 86 kilometers.

Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a 5.5-magnitude earthquake in the region, occurring approximately 50 kilometers northeast of Sibolga, North Sumatra.

The tremor was recorded at 22:23 GMT on March 17 with a depth of 52 kilometers. Initial data placed the epicenter at 1.96 degrees north latitude and 99.18 degrees east longitude.

There have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
