Workshop to improve workforce’s skills
PANO - The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA), in association with the International Labor Organization (ILO) organized a workshop on December 13 in Hanoi to seek solutions for Vietnamese workers to prepare for changes in technology and meet labor requirements.
Statistics shows that by 2016, only 11.21 million out of 54.35 million laborers hold degrees and certificates and the country is running short of skilled laborers especially in mechanical engineering, electronics and electrical engineering.
ILO Deputy Director for Asia Pacific Countries David Lamotte said that Vietnam has yet to witness the impact of technology at workplaces as that in some developed countries in ASEAN and it is because of high labor and technology investment costs. However, this is only a matter of time, he added.
New technology trends not only bring new opportunities, but also pose new challenges for businesses and laborers. Therefore, Vietnam needs to give priority to job skills and workforce, strengthen coordination among policy-makers, employers and training institutions to modernize the vocational training system to better prepare for changes in workplaces.
