Vietnamese student receives Ph.D. scholarship at Oxford University
PANO - Graduating top of the IT class, Huynh Ngoc Tuyen is also the first Information Technology graduate of RMIT University Vietnam to receive an offer to do a Ph.D. at the University of Oxford.
Being a shy and reserved student, during high school Tuyen never reached out nor made himself visible to others. He realized that this greatly hindered him from opening up his potential.

Huynh Ngoc Tuyen is the first Information Technology graduate of RMIT University Vietnam to receive an offer to do a Ph.D. at the University of Oxford. |
Upon starting study at RMIT University Vietnam, Tuyen promised to change himself. He actively participated in the university’s activities and projects, Tuyen shared.
In his first year at RMIT, Tuyen set up a LED board program, which now marks the entrance to the office of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology. Meanwhile, he joined the non-profit organization Fight for Dreams and used his technical knowledge to create a website showcasing information about the organization. Through the website, he raised money for more than 100 students in Tien Giang province.
In his final year, Tuyen focused on the DART project, an integrated digital system for dengue outbreak prediction and monitoring, in collaboration with Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU). His outstanding performance brought him an official position as a research fellow at OUCRU, and PhD scholarship in Clinical Medicine at Oxford University.
According to Dr. Marc Choisy, Head of Mathematical Modelling at OUCRU and Tuyen’s supervisor, Tuyen is the youngest staff at OUCRU, an organization of 350, but mature for his age. He is very modest and kind to his colleagues.
The personal change journey at RMIT helped Tuyen realize his aspiration and the direction he wants to pursue in the coming time. He hoped that his journey would be an inspiration for other students to find out their potential and achieve success. Approaching new things, he always thinks of the quote ‘Aim for the moon because even if you miss, you can still land on stars.”
