Doctors from the Hanoi Heart Hospital and the Ho Chi Minh City Heart Hospital have successfully performed surgery on three babies 6-19 months old, who suffered from ventricular septal defect.
The three patients were Hoang Minh Anh (six months old from Hai Phong), Ta Quang Manh (19 months old from Hanoi), and Do Dinh Quang (six months old from Ha Tay).
They were all hospitalised in critical condition suffering from serious respiratory distress. Doctors decided to perform three surgeries, each lasting between 5-6 hours. The three patients had their aorta and pulmonary arteries relocated properly and they are now recovering.
According to Nguyen Van Mao, director of the Hanoi Heart Hospital, ventricular septal defect is a very complicated congenital heart defect which requires sophisticated surgical techniques.
The successful operations have opened up opportunities for many children suffering from the same disease. Many patients have undergone similar operations overseas, costing between VND300-400 million each. Now they can have the operation done in Vietnam for only VND50 million.
