Lao Xa is a small hamlet located deep in Sung La valley, some 6km from the center of Sung La commune and some 130km from Ha Giang city in the Northernmost province of the same name. In recent years, this hamlet has been known widely for its primitive and peaceful beauty. Lao Xa looks the most beautiful in spring. At this time of year, peach, pear blossoms and mustard flowers blooming on the rocky slopes and in the gardens of locals draw the attention of many tourists to take photos and rest.
Lao Xa hamlet is home to more than 100 H’mong ethnic minority households. In the hamlet, there remain some traditional houses with gardens, yards, and rounded by stone fences.
During his first visit to Lao Xa this spring, Nguyen Van Ngo, a tourist from Hanoi was impressed by local houses and stone fences being kept intact. He spent three days exploring the hamlet and captured the beauty of local flowers next to traditional houses through his lens. Tourists are advised to drive motorbikes or automobiles to the hamlet.
On the roads to the farthest site of the hamlet, what tourists want to see the most is brilliantly-blooming peach and pear blossoms.
Peach blossoms bloom from mid-February to late March, according to Nguyen Van Trai, a local guide. This year, Lao Xa hamlet is one of the localities in Ha Giang enjoying peach blossoms blooming the earliest. Since the end of February, many tourists have flocked to this hamlet to contemplate peach blossoms, the symbol of spring in the Ha Giang karst plateau.
Like peach blossoms, white pear blossoms have their season ending in late March. The image of peach and pear blossoms distinguishing themselves from the background of the earthen walls and yin-yang tiled roofs has become typical in Lao Xa hamlet in particular and H’mong villages in Ha Giang in general.
For tourist Mai Nguyen from Hanoi, the beauty of nature, local culture and people impressed her so much. “In the highland place with mainly arid soil and rock, perhaps only in spring can one feel a clear sense of vitality,” said Mai Nguyen.
The hamlet is beautiful for its nature and local people’s simplicity and honesty. The people are friendly and the children are as innocent as their age, and “there is not much commercialization like some other places,” according to tourists Nguyen Van Ngo and Mai Nguyen.
To explore the hamlet, visitors are advised to live in local homestays – ancient houses - where they could learn more about the H’mong ethnic minority group’s typical culture, touch the old earthen walls, look at each yin and yang tile covered with moss, and live the life of local people.
