Long Chau is an archipelago consisting of around 30 limestone islets and reefs. It is located 15 kilometers Southeast of Cat Ba townlet, Cat Hai district, Hai Phong city. Among them, Long Chau is the largest island, formed by gray stone from mountain ranges like those of Ha Giang karst plateau, covering an area of over 1.2 square kilometers.
Long Chau Island was called Archipen des Fai Tsi long or Griffes du Dragon (Dragon's Claws) by the French. In 1894, they built a lighthouse on the island to illuminate the way for ships at sea. The lighthouse is named “the pearl eye of Long Chau” by fishermen. Long Chau is one of the three oldest lighthouses in Vietnam, along with Hon Dau Lighthouse and Ke Ga Lighthouse, which are all 114 years old and over.
In late April, Nguyen Trong Cung from Thai Binh visited the island to admire the third oldest lighthouse in Vietnam. According to him, tourists have to seek the approval from Long Chau Border Post to visit the island.
Since tourists are not allowed to stay overnight on the island, Cung hired a fishing boat from local fishermen to travel from Cat Ba townlet to the island.
While on the island, tourists should mind their steps since there are sharp gray stone cliffs and various poisonous insects and reptiles like snakes and centipedes on paths.
Entirely built of stone, Long Chau Lighthouse is 109.5m high, and its light can travel the distance of up to 50 kilometers. Its operation relies on a solar power system.
Despite the harsh weather conditions and hundreds of airstrikes by the U.S. Air Force during wartime, the lighthouse stands firmly on the cliff, facing the East Sea (South China Sea), guiding thousands of ships in and out of the Gulf of Tonkin for over a century.
On days with clear sky, from the top of the lighthouse, tourists can see Lan Ha Bay of Hai Phong city and Ha Long Bay of Quang Ninh province. Apart from visiting the lighthouse, tourists can also rent boats to explore the island, enjoy the salty sea breeze, and admire the mountain ranges.
