A Vietnamese boy has been placed among 49 outstanding young people honoured at the annual awards ceremony for international students in Australia.

Truong Manh Tue won the prize for the most outstanding achievement on the 2010 high school graduation examination in Australia with a total of 99.9 points.

He began his studies at TAFE then continued at the Homebush Boys High School.

“As the only Vietnamese student at TAFE, I had many opportunities to communicate in English with foreign friends and explore the culture, history, customs and people of Australia,” Tue said. “This experience has helped me a great deal in my studies.”

According to Tue, the strength of the Australian education system is that “it encourages pupils to choose their favourite subjects and actively pursue their own ideas.” As a result, he studied for passion, not for high marks or because of pressure from his family. In addition, the Australian system promoted his self-confidence in public speaking and independent learning and research without relying too much on teachers.

Tue said his most challenging experience in Australia was learning the language and customs of the local people.

The Vietnamese student has now set a target to perform well in his university courses to become a medical doctor.
