Putting all efforts into helping children keep up with study
Major Cam Ba Thanh was born in a poor house in the border district of Thuong Xuan, Thanh Hoa province. When he was a child, he was really impressed by the beautiful image of a border soldier. Since then, he dreamt of being a solider working in border areas.
In 2021, he was assigned to work in Moc Chau district, Son La province. Being aware of difficulties facing local children in study, he made recommendations to the unit’s Party Committee and Chain-of-command to implement a project to build a classroom and five kitchens for local students in kindergartens in Chieng Khua commune, Moc Chau district, worth totally more than VND 600 million.

Meanwhile, he is responsible for the “Supporting children to go to school” and “Adopted children of border posts” programs, adopting two children in the unit and taking care of three others, including one Lao child. He also directed youths of the unit to prepare regular breakfast for 12 children in a kindergarten in Buoc Pat village, Long Sap commune and supported necessities for 70 students in Long Sap Primary School. These activities have contributed to ensuring nutritious meals for the children to keep up with their study, thereby becoming future good citizens.
The model has been implemented for 11 years in Buoc Pat village. The unit sent troops, in coordination with teachers, distributed meals to the students. As a result, from 2012 to 2022, the unit supported nearly 680 students, contributing to encouraging them to continue their study.
Sharing about his noble deeds, he noted that border troops always consider border children’s joy their own joy after hard working hours. “I myself always consider them my relatives, so each soldier wholeheartedly put sentiments to each meal for the students in Buoc Pat village,” underscored Major Cam Ba Thanh.
Joining hands to nurture “little seeds” in border areas
Major Thanh held that he had to cover a 10-kilometer distance on foot to reach the classroom. “But I think that study is the only way to escape from poverty; therefore, I always seek any edge to help the children keep up with their study. This is the reason why I've implemented the model,” added Major Cam Ba Thanh.
By chance, Apec Group in Hanoi held a charity program in Long Sap commune. Knowing Major Cam Ba Thanh’s idea, the organization definitively supported and was willing to adopt 35 students.
To realize Major Cam Ba Thanh’s idea, the Border Post of Long Sap Border Gate and Apec Group signed a cooperation agreement to take care of needy students in the area until they graduate from university and college and get jobs. “I hope the program would change their life,” Major Cam Ba Thanh shared.
Senior Colonel Vu Duc Tu, Deputy Political Commissar of the Son La provincial Border Guard Command, noted that the program is conducted regularly and highly appreciated by the local authorities.
Talking about his ambition, Major Cam Ba Thanh expressed his hope that the program would be supported by many other enterprises and sponsors, contributing to improving the border people life, especially the border students, for their brighter future.
