At around 11 a.m., while on duty, Corporal Cuong saw Vu Thi Thao (from Trai Ca 2 hamlet, Tan Quang commune, Luc Ngan district, Bac Giang province) slip and fall into a deep stream with a strong current. Without hesitation, he jumped into the water and swam swiftly to reach her.

At the same time, Major Hieu, who was nearby commanding troops, heard the cries for help and quickly joined Corporal Cuong to bring Thao safely ashore.

“I was collecting duckweed when the bank collapsed, causing me to fall into the stream. I panicked as I could not swim and could only scream for help. Fortunately, the soldiers came just in time,” Thao shared.

Corporal Cuong said that the rescue skills he used were learned during a training session on search and rescue operations at his unit.

Visiting and commending the rescuers, Lieutenant Colonel Phan Van Quyen, Political Commissar of Regiment 18, emphasized that their courage, composure, and training were critical in saving a life under dangerous conditions, an act that could have endangered their own.

The brave and timely deed of Hieu and Cuong exemplifies the responsibility, compassion, and noble virtue of Uncle Ho’s soldiers.
