The meeting was attended by senior military officers of different generations, leaders of defense agencies and military units, representatives of Central-level agencies and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc. Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong, and Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan sent congratulation flowers to the meeting.
Chief of the General Staff Senior Lieutenant General Phan Van Giang gave a briefing on the 75-year glorious history of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army.
On the day the General Staff was founded, President Ho Chi Minh instructed that the General Staff must be an essential military agency with its functions and missions: conducting military training, grasping situations, mapping strategies, drawing up combat plans for large-scale operations and direct the whole military to defeat any enemy and firmly protect revolutionary achievements.
Over the past 75 years, following Uncle Ho’s teachings, the General Staff, under the leadership of the Party Central Committee, Central Military Commission (CMC) and Ministry of National Defense and with the great support from Central agencies, local authorities and people, achieved numerous great victories in the national liberation wars against foreign invaders as well as in the current national development and defense cause.

To firmly protect the Fatherland in the current context, the General Staff has developed military doctrines, military arts and military strategies in response to various scenarios and military contingencies. It has also led the military and localities to build massive and well-organized militia, self-defense and reserve forces as well as to develop the people’s warfare and consolidate the people’s defense posture in couple of the people’s security posture.
Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc asked the General Staff to always follow the Party's and State’s policies on defense, security and military affairs.
He stated that, during the resistance war against France, it directed armed forces to launch offensives to defeat the colonialists’ highest warfare efforts, and along with the entire people conducted a nine-year resistance war full of hardships and sacrifices, with the peak of the Dien Bien Phu Victory.
In the fight against the US, the General Staff submitted timely advice to the Politburo, the Central Military Commission and the Defense Ministry, directed the military combat as well as revolutionary movements in the south, drew up major combat plans, military strategies, and opened strategic transportation routes at sea and on land to transport a huge amount of logistics to the southern battlefield, supporting southern revolutionary forces in fighting the enemy, stressed Prime Minister Phuc.
He also highlighted the General Staff’s contributions to the victories of the wars in the northern and southern borders to safeguard the nation, as well as to the Cambodian people’s victory over the genocidal regime, and Laos’ victory over acts of sabotage by hostile forces to protect the Lao revolutionary achievements.

He hailed the General Staff’s effort in instructing the VPA in preventing and dealing with natural disasters and epidemics, search and rescue, building new-style rural areas, and especially combating against COVID-19, thereby helping enhance the solidarity between the army and the people.
Regarding the Vietnamese military delegation participating in the ongoing International Army Games 2020 hosted by Russia, he congratulated the performances by all Vietnamese military teams at the event, particularly the Vietnamese Tank Team on its first-ever gold medal at the Tank Biathlon.
At the meeting, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on behalf of the Party and State presented the first-class “Fatherland Protection” Order to the General Staff of the Vietnam’s People Army in recognition of its great achievements over the past years.
Earlier on the day, a delegation of the General Staff visited the President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and lit incense at the Heroic Martyrs' Monument.
