General Chien made the commendation at a reception for newly-appointed Vietnamese Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and Head of the Vietnamese Delegation to the EU Nguyen Van Thao at the MND’s headquarters on May 26.

At the meeting, General Chien congratulated Ambassador Thao on his new appointment, saying that it is Thao’s great honor and responsibility to work in strategic partner countries of Vietnam.

The deputy defense minister said that the Politburo, Prime Minister and MND leadership approved policies and approaches to reinforce defense cooperation between Vietnam and the EU. He spoke highly of the outstanding achievements in the bilateral defense relations since 2018. He emphasized the two sides’ great efforts to maintain cooperation activities via online and in-person meetings amid the complicated development of the COVID-19.

General Chien suggested Ambassador Thao, in his new post, work closely with the EU to strengthen cooperation in personnel training, U.N. peacekeeping operations. He also asked the EU side to dispatch experienced experts to Vietnam to train Vietnamese personnel and share information related to gender equality, war consequence relief, crisis management, peacekeeping, and more.

Expressing thanks to the Vietnamese general for the reception, Ambassador Thao confirmed in his post in Belgium and the EU, he would do his utmost to boost exchanges, make proposals on enhancing defense cooperation between Vietnam and Belgium and the EU as suggested by the deputy defense minister.
