U.N. supports Viet Nam in expanding participation in peacekeeping operations
PANO - As part of General Secretary and President To Lam's trip to attend the High-level General Debate of the 81st United Nations General Assembly and conduct bilateral activities in the U.S., Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister General Phan Van Giang held a meeting with U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix at the U.N. Headquarters in New York on September 23 (local time).

At the meeting, U.N. Under-Secretary-General Jean-Pierre Lacroix spoke highly of Viet Nam's policy of support and its active and effective participation in U.N. peacekeeping operations in recent years. He welcomed Viet Nam's commitments to implementing relevant U.N. goals and targets, particularly increasing the proportion of female military personnel participating in peacekeeping operations.
General Phan Van Giang highly appreciated the U.N.'s support for Viet Nam over the past 49 years since the country became a U.N. member. He emphasized the U.N.'s particularly important and undeniable role in developing the international legal system, maintaining peace, preventing conflicts, and responding to global challenges.
He affirmed that Viet Nam has consistently pursued an independent and self-reliant foreign policy for peace, cooperation, and development, and is a friend, a reliable partner and a responsible member of the international community. As an active and responsible U.N. member state, Viet Nam consistently adheres to the U.N. Charter, resolutions and action programs. In the defense and security fields, Viet Nam actively participates in the U.N.'s joint efforts to address non-traditional security challenges, contributing to the maintenance of regional and international peace and security, particularly through U.N. peacekeeping operations, disarmament, and the prevention and combat of transnational crime.
Also at the meeting, the Vietnamese Deputy PM expressed his hope that the U.N. would continue to support and assist Viet Nam in expanding its participation in peacekeeping operations in terms of both deployment formats and scale.
Agreeing with General Phan Van Giang's views, U.N. Under-Secretary-General Jean-Pierre Lacroix affirmed that the U.N. supports and stands ready to assist Viet Nam in building its capabilities and making greater contributions to peacekeeping operations.
