This is the third time that Vietnam has hosted an edition of Vesak.
Talking with reporters from the People’s Army Newspaper, international delegates expressed their deep impressions of the beauty of Vietnam, its culture, people, and more importantly religious freedom and practices in the country.

John M. Scorsine, a delegate from the U.S., said that Vietnam is a peaceful country with spectacular landscapes, hospitable people, and rich culture, and more especially, a nation of great opportunities.
Highlighting the theme of the UN Day of Vesak 2019 “Buddhism’s Approach to Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Sustainable Societies,” he affirmed that the theme not only reflected the need to address world’s urgent problems, including war and poverty, but also conveyed a message calling upon people worldwide to contribute to the common development of the world and ensure that no one is left behind.
The U.S. delegate also spoke highly of Vietnam’s efforts in developing Buddhism. The active participation of Vietnamese leaders, Buddhist dignitaries, monks, nuns and followers in activities of the Vesak 2019 could make much sense, he added.

Joining the event in Vietnam for the first time, Michel Angel Vargas Perez-Abreu, a Buddhist from Cuba, was strongly impressed by the friendly and hospitality of Vietnamese volunteers at the event. He said that through talks with Vietnamese Buddhists, he better understood the contributions of Vietnam’s Buddhism to the development of the nation and religious freedom and practices in the country.

Ngo Tien Diep, an overseas Vietnamese from Russia shared a different feeling of this visit to Vietnam, saying that he could clearly recognized the development of Vietnam’s Buddhism along the development of various religions and beliefs in the country. He said he was so impressed by a rapid increase in the number of new spectacular pagodas and temples in the country in recent years.
